What Is The Difference Between Cultivated, Organic & Wild-Crafted Herbs?

Cultivated herbs are farmed for mass production. They may be genetically modified and are usually sprayed with insecticides, pesticides and fungicides.  Following harvest they are typically fumigated with sulfur dioxide to prevent spoilage caused by bugs and mould.  Some people can have sulfur sensitivities to fumigated herbs.

Organic herbs are grown without the used of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and are free from genetic modification or enhancements. Organic is a legal concept that refers to some form of certification process by a regional and/or national agency, which herb farmers need to apply for.

The cost of certification can be prohibitive for small time herb farmers in China, especially when the demand for organic products in local Chinese markets is very low compared to North America.  Therefore even though our herbs test negative for pesticides and harmful chemicals beyond what is required by organic regulatory agencies, they cannot legally be labeled as organic herbs.

Wild-crafted herbs refer to herbs collected from their natural or indigenous habitat.  They have not been cultivated by men.  Although these herbs are as natural as one can hope to get, habitats can be damaged during the harvesting process.  The best practice is what is called Responsibly Wild Crafted.  These are usually harvested with minimal environmental impact, and herbs are often replanted with long-term sustainability in mind.  Our raw herb supplier Nuherb share our philosophy of ecological sustainability and provide us with wild-crafted herbs when possible.
